Meet the team!

WAIT 1_edited.jpg

W.A.I.T is a small team of 5! From left to right is Mick, Maxine, Nick, Sue and Becky.

Below there is a snippet of who we are, why we'd like to go on this mission trip and a "fun fact"!

Mick & Max

We have been at WBC for 5 years. Mick was previously a member here up to 2006 when we got married at which time we attended Sutton Elms BC.
We were inspired a few years ago when our son Harry went to South Africa for 6 months with Ambassadors in Sport where after an internship in Cape Town he ran a soccer coaching with Christian outreach programme in a township in George where we visited and spent time with him and the minister and church family.
Mick is retired and when Maxine retires in a few years we see this as an opportunity to see whether mission is an area in which we may serve.

Maxine enjoys garden construction and a few years ago she completed the building of a wall and path and steps which involved digging a large hole which took about 11 years to complete using a child’s beach spade. She is nothing if not persistent.
Mick enjoys cooking and now he is retired he does all the cooking at home and at times for our large extended family. A few years ago when he had to go into hospital for a major operation the children’s main concern was whether he would recover in time to prepare Christmas lunch. Not sure what this says about Maxine’s culinary skills!

Sue

My name is Sue. I am married to Nick. I have been at WBC for 13 years and this is the longest time that I have ever lived in the same house. I am a District Nurse and currently work with the Clinical Education Team in Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust. This means I help support and teach community nurses to look after people in their own homes. I have a passion for community and health promotion. I am hoping that this insight trip to Albania will help me to get a glimpse of how some of the projects in Albania are helping to meet the needs of the community - particularly the Roma Community.

Fun fact: I once trod chewing gum into the red carpet at Buckingham Palace ðŸ¤ª

Becky

I'm Becky and I have been at WBC for 4 years now. I have however spent most of my "Christian life" at a different church until I met my Husband and we settled down in Whetstone and found WBC! I have always had a yearning to do missionary work but life has been hectic and the timing has never felt right. When there was the initial talk of sending an insight team to Albania, I knew immediately it was God saying "now is the time" and I knew if I didn't jump at the opportunity I would regret it, although life is still hectic I am much more comfortable and settled. I am particularly interested in community outreach as I currently work with separated parents and their children, and aspire to be a Social Worker when my studies are complete.

At the age of 19, working full-time and carefree, I decided to buy an ex-race horse (point-to-pointer!) to re-train. It was not easy and he enjoyed bucking me off, but I persisted and he gave me some of the best years of my life! I've even rode on the beach and done some cross-country (although I love riding, I'm not the best, but it's the love of it that made me continue on!)

Nick

I am Nick Swanson, married to Sue who is also on the Albania team. We have been part of the church family at WBC for almost 13 years. I was asked if I would care for the pastoral and spiritual needs of the team and was delighted to say ‘Yes’. Having been to the Balkans on mission before, I am very excited to see what God is doing at the Tek Ura centre, near Tirana, and to meet the folk there.
